This song is all about getting used...and liking it. He sings about how his friends tell him to forget about this girl and move on, but he's like: "If this is what it's like to use me, use me up". This is sometimes very true. Sometimes you have to see things from a certain angle before you can understand why someone makes the decisions that they make. As corny as it is, that whole "walk in someone else's shoes" is really true. I've been in friendships and relationships of which other people really like to judge the fairness, necessity, and happiness. Then again, your friends are probably just trying to look out for you, Bill.
The song is Withers' second biggest success in the US, commercially. He took it all the way to #2 on the Hot 100 list. Withers is also a resident of my home state, West Virginia. Born as the youngest of six children in Slab Fork, WV, Withers was raised in Beckley, WV, which is about a two-hour trek from where I grew up. It's cool to learn about people that are from you home state that have made it in the industry in which your interested in pursuing a career.
