Some Kind of Wonderful - Grand Funk Railroad

I'm sure everyone has probably heard this song at one point or another, but have you ever really listened to it? If you do, you'll realize how simple the song really is. The whole song is basically drums and bass with some vocals and a little organ layered over the top. Sometimes it's the simple songs that make the biggest hits. The version above by Grand Funk reached #3 on the Hot 100 in 1974.

The song was written by John Ellison in 1967. It was recorded that same year by a group he joined in Rochester, NY. The group, Soul Brothers Five, changed their name to Soul Brothers Six shortly after Ellison's arrival. Ellison made this move in the mid-60's. This was their biggest hit, only climbing to #91 on which Grand Funk to the song much higher just a few years later. Ellison, like myself, is originally from West Virginia, a small, coal-mining community called Landgraff. Telling you that Welch, WV is close by probably doesn't help many people place the town.
